The Cabin

996 - 998 Dumbarton Road, Glasgow, G14 9UJ

The Cabin is a pretty unique sort of place, one of those that should be visited at least once in every life. There is one sitting per night, and ideally you make up a table of like-minded souls, for reasons that will become apparent, and book in advance. The meal is table d'hote and consists of three courses of imaginative quality Scottish food with more than a hint from across the Irish Sea. Frequent encounters are guinea fowl with parsnip puree and griddled salmon with seafood risotto and their soda bread is legendary. Food on one side the other highlight of the evening is, by tradition, an extempore performance of operatic arias and the like by Wilma, the singing waitress, in which as the pace gathers momentum, you are more than likely to be asked to participate.

REVIEWS OF The Cabin

Eric Morrison (7 March 2010)

I was amazed to see some negative comments about the Cabin. We had a brilliant night on Saturday for my wife's birthday. Denis is the perfect host, making you feel welcome and at home from start to end. The staff were attentive, pleasant and efficient. The food we had was excellent, especially the lobster bisque, venison and beef wellington, the latter of the two being cooked to perfection - pink and succulent. The desserts were to die for. The after dinner entertainment and sing-along was also excellent. If you are after a quiet evening don't go here - but if you are up for a lively, great night out and then the Cabin is for you!

I was at The Cabin on Saturday for a 60th birthday, ten of us we were hardly in the door when we were told to tone it down as there were others to consider and it was early in the night at 8pm and The Cabin itself wasn’t completely full. We were at the door and it was freezing, when the food came it was cold and some had to be sent back. The well done steak had blood running out of it when we finally managed to get the host Denis out - he was the one who told us to keep quiet - he said we should have let him know but neither of the waitresses had appeared for the last 20 minutes The Cabin is now just another restaurant with reasonable food. There’s nothing special about the entertainment and for what they are charging you could get better elsewhere. I haven’t been there for a while but won’t be back as they are playing on their reputation now. We found Denis to be quite rude and not the least bit interested in the patrons. A couple at the next table said if we hadn’t come in they would have left early; also don’t expect the entertainment to start at 9 as we were told it doesn’t start until 10. It’s overpriced for this day and age and we were well over £400 for an expensive and disappointing night.
