The City Merchant Restaurant
97-99 Candleriggs, Glasgow, G1 1NP
Plumb in the centre of the city area of Glasgow is the City Merchant Restaurant, founded by the Matteo family in 1988 and now one of the most popular and well-known eating houses of the area, particularly popular with family groups. Seafood is the prime attraction and, combined with a strong sense of Scottishness adds greatly to the reputation of this excellent restaurant. Prices are reasonable, service is cheerful and efficient and the place hums with enjoyment. The à la carte might bring such dishes as cullen skink, Loch Etive mussels, juicy langoustines from the West Coast, freshly poached asparagus with red and yellow pepper syrups, oysters served as oysters should be and accompanied by a flute of The Merchant's Black Velvet.Plumb in the centre of the city area of Glasgow is the City Merchant Restaurant, founded by the Matteo family in 1988 and now one of the most popular and well-known eating houses of the area, particularly popular with family groups. The Scottish Seafood Platter is of a size and nature which only exists in most peoples' dreams, steaks are sent from Ayrshire with T-bones weighing in at 16 oz, or fillet combined with half a lobster, if that's your line. The very Scottish clootie dumpling drizzled with light custard makes an excellent dessert.

REVIEWS OF The City Merchant Restaurant
Nikki Camp (18 April 2008)
Having dined in Glasgow several times on business, I had to hunt around for something new. City Merchant looked unpretentious with an excellent menu. This is exactly what you want - relax at the end of a busy day. It did exactly what it said on the tin. The atmosphere was lovely and informal with that special feel. The service was excellent and they had truly good staff that are so hard to find. With a Scottish influenced menu and a specials board with seafood, there were plenty of seasonal choices. The black bream with chorizo mash was simply outstanding as a main and my asparagus starter was beautifully fresh. My colleague had seafood bisque, which was hearty and full of flavour and venison with herb and black pudding dumpling for mains, which she is still raving about and is desperate to know the recipe. The house recommended wines are very reasonable and I will certainly be eating there again.
