The Clanfield Tavern
Bampton Road, Clanfield, nr Faringdon, OX18 2RG
In the heart of the Cotswolds in the pretty village of Clanfield, The Clanfield Tavern has been welcoming locals and travellers since 1610. Pale walls give the traditional oak-beamed dining room a modern feel, while the bright conservatory has an open, airy atmosphere and a striking wine wall. Hearty British comfort food, from steak and kidney pudding to homemade fish pie and fresh sandwiches and salad form the backbone of the restaurant menu. Alternatively for something a little more elaborate try the deep fried tiger prawns with crispy vegetables or wild rabbit and bacon terrine with Shilbrook Manor Medlar jelly. If you are fortunate, you may even find Gloucester Old Spot pork and quails egg on the bar to nibble on.In the heart of the Cotswolds in the pretty village of Clanfield, The Clanfield Tavern has been welcoming locals and travellers since 1610. REVIEWS OF The Clanfield Tavern
Nick (16 March 2009)
We spent a wonderful evening at the Clanfield Tavern. The service was first class. When we walked into the bar we were met by a friendly welcome from the locals at the bar and were swiftly served drinks and led to our table by our waitress for the evening. The menu was varied and I’m told it changes regularly, so for returning diners there will be plenty to choose from. Our meals were served quickly and they were both outstanding and extremely well presented. I had pigeon breast, which was cooked beautifully, and my partner enjoyed the sea bass’ which I’m told was melt in the mouth. The staff also informed me that much of the vegetables and seasonings used in our meal are from their own garden situated at the back of the pub. I was offered a tour the next time I return; it was a little too dark this evening. The real ale selection was also very good. They only have the option of keeping three ales at any one time, but they are all kept brilliantly. I know this because they offer a 'tasting board’ where you can purchase a 1/3 of a pint of each ale, in their own 1/3 pint glasses, for the price of one pint. I am also partial to a fine whisky now and again and the landlord has recently started building a selection which he happily showed me, I was driving so I couldn’t sample them! The final bill was very reasonable. I will certainly be returning soon, and I recommend this establishment to anyone. It’s fantastic, friendly and fun. That’s how I would describe the Clanfield Tavern.

We visited this place after hearing it had changed hands again but now I certainly won’t be returning. We hardly saw the waitress all night, and kept having to find her to order a drink. My wife had a pigeon to start with, which was very tough and overcooked. For mains two of us had steaks, which were cold and very dry, as if they had been cooked and then kept warm on a hot plate or oven for some time. On pointing all these factors out to the waitress she just laughed as if I was joking. We then decided to escalate this to the manageress who was rude and didn’t want to know. On the plus side the homemade chips and salmon were very nice.
