The Commander
47 Hereford Road, Baywater, London, W2 5AH
Commander Porterhouse and Oyster Bar opened on the site of a former pub and is now transformed to a charming restaurant in the Notting Hill area of London. The restaurant is outfitted with dark wood furniture and warm lighting, and in the evening this place teems with regulars bonding over a seafood parade piled high or glasses of cocktails at the bar. The menu brings out starters of crawfish cocktail, dressed crab, springbok carpaccio and seared foie gras. Main courses of fish pie with saffron, leeks and vermouth, and roast corn-fed chicken breast with black eye bean and chorizo cassoulet are wonderfully satisfying, and the daily market grills show promise as well with plaice fillets, 10 oz T-bone steak and pork and leek sausages.Commander Porterhouse and Oyster Bar opened on the site of a former pub and is now transformed to a charming restaurant in the Notting Hill area of London. REVIEWS OF The Commander
Keano's cat (6 June 2007)
I went to The Commander for a friend's birthday on Saturday and was left with a feeling of disappointment from what should have been a pleasant evening. On a positive note we had reserved an area that had inside and outside space and had table service for the whole evening (that the birthday girl had arranged to pay for separately). Sadly there were several negative notes. The food is pretty expensive for what you get, £13 for a burger and chips (the waitress asked how we would like them cooked but they all came back very well done). The manager took a credit card to cover the food orders, assuring us that nothing would actually be charged to it. At the end of the evening she then tried to charge £80 to it and blamed her waitress (who had done a great job all evening) for telling us otherwise. £15 of the bill turned out to be for service (already paid for), everyone else who had paid with a card had also been charged service. This matter was settled very grudgingly by the manager left us feeling ungrateful for not wanting to pay twice to be served. To top it off some people were charged service for getting drinks from the bar. There are plenty of better places around here to drink, I won't be going back.

Awful time at The Commander - paid for table service, received hardly any all night and then got charged an extra service charge on ALL of the tabs at the end of the evening. Waitress staff when we saw them were pleasant but the 'manageress' (in its loosest sense) was rude and arrogant. Shan't be returning.
