The Compass

58 Penton Street, Islington, London, N1 9PZ

A proper scrumpy on draft, some reasonably priced food and a vibrant atmosphere are a few of the elements that make for an impressive dining experience anywhere, and The Compass fits the bill well. So head to Penton Street and discover a gastropub, bar and a friendly neighbourhood restaurant all rolled into one. Although the menu holds plenty of interest, it might be worth noting some of the action behind the scenes with the kitchen team doing much of the picking, foraging and catching. So wild garlic is picked in Devon and mushrooms from The New Forest, all of which translates into braised English snails with garlic and parsley, and smoked herring with potato salad and sour cream in the evening carte.

A Cornish fish stew and rare breed rib-eye steak have that unmistakable local appeal.

The wine list at The Compass seems to favour Portugal and independent vineyards in Pergos in particular, but Old and New World wines in addition to unusual blends like Lebanese red are also worth considering.
