The Crown Brasserie

The Buttlands, Wells-next-the-Sea, NR23 1EX

This former coaching inn has been transformed into a smart and stylish hotel where comfort and luxury are priorities, yet none of the original charm and character has been adversely affected. The Crown Hotel looks out over The Buttlands, a quiet, tree lined green, and offers visitors a chance to enjoy delicious meals in the orangery or in the more conservative restaurant. Traditional British food and a foray into Euro Asian cuisine ensure that your dining experience is exciting to say the least. Amongst starters, there's that old favourite, devilled kidneys on toasted brioche with sour cream, although the Crown Black Slate with its interesting mix of Asian and European appetisers on a dramatic black slate tile finds many takers.

Main courses tend to stray into seafood choices such as pan roasted halibut and black pudding with creamed leeks and red wine jus. A superb wine list complements the menu expertly.

REVIEWS OF The Crown Brasserie

AceGracie (18 March 2009)

We ate at the Crown as part of a large party in their restaurant and we were devoid of any 'fine dining' experience. Even though we pre-ordered, our starters took an age to arrive and when they did the ham hock and duck terrine was very salty and my feta salad was doused in all-consuming vinaigrette. The food is not appetising when it tastes all the same and that same is vinegar! Very slow service followed again and then all the steaks that had been ordered were cool to cold. They were taken back but by the time they re-appeared everyone else at the table had finished and we'd kind of lost the will to eat. I've never enjoyed a meal out so little - the whole experience was drab and shoddy.

J. Peters (11 February 2006)

The hotel exhibits a dilapidated air. A good lick of paint and refurbishment would not go amiss. The staff are pleasant and willing but the menus are not exciting. Plain cooking is very evident and the area for bar snacks is not smoke free, unfortunately.
