The Curlew Restaurant
Junction Road, Bodiam, TN32 5UY
The Curlew Restaurant was once a coaching inn where travellers could rest their weary feet and warm their spirits with food and drink. Even its location on Bodiam Castle crossroads is ideal for those seeking temporary respite from the rain-sodden route to London from Hastings. Today it dons a new role under the ownership of Mark and Sara Colley and is transformed into a place where meticulously prepared food meets informal dining and country-chic meets contemporary designing. The food at The Curlew is modern British built around seasonality and local sourcing. Some exciting starters include coronation curried crab with oak-smoked salmon, brown bread and butter, and slow cooked duck egg with warm smoked haddock, brown shrimp and caper butter. The Curlew Restaurant was once a coaching inn where travellers could rest their weary feet and warm their spirits with food and drink. REVIEWS OF The Curlew Restaurant
Paul Cooper (17 April 2010)
What an amazing find. Nearby Hastings has a buzzing cafe scene of nice places to eat, but is a desert for the gourmet. Drive a short distance north to Bodiam, Staplecross and the Curlew will not disappoint anyone. The portions initially look small, but the chef's creations are of such flavours and textures, the meal will fill you by the end. I really like the wine list, not overpriced, but all superb quality, and the availability of 50dl carafes of many wines cater for different wines with different courses, or the driver only having a single glass. The service is excellent, professional, yet friendly. Also, the tables are far enough apart not to hear other conversations, and the tables have a central pillar, so no corner legs - why cant all restaurants be like this! Thoroughly recommended!

I ate at The Curlew last summer when the place had only just opened. My wife and I, to pass the time on long journeys, often list the top ten meals we've eaten together - we have a marriage and now a family built on food, cooking and dining, our six-year old's favourite TV program is Master chef! The most regrettable thing about The Curlew is that my wife and family weren't with me to experience it. Rarely have I come away from a restaurant with such enthusiasm about going back. I started with the slow cooked duck egg, my main was red wine braised beef, and for desert I had some wonderful junket. The table shared a couple of bottles of excellent sauvignon blanc and a splendid desert wine. The food and presentation were wonderfully imaginative. I live in Nottingham but have already planned a trip south with my wife - that way we can enter The Curlew in our top ten meals together.
