The Dockmaster's House

1 Hertsmere Road, London, E14 8JJ

Situated within a listed three storied Georgian building, with a two hundred year old history, what was once an excise house for the London Docklands is now home to the stunning Indian Restaurant, The Dockmaster's House. Enhancing and retaining the beauty and splendour of the original structure, the interior is contemporarily designed to include stone and marble floors, good use of warm lighting and rich colours in the décor and a large glass wall creating a comfortable, airy and stylish space. The Indian menu has some prominent shades of the British cooking and you could expect extremely well crafted dishes to be served on the table. Start with a kebab platter, that comprises of tandoori prawn, chicken and swordfish tikka and ginger lamb chops followed by stir fried beef rump with green and red chilli or the mildly spiced lamb, slow cooked in a rich yoghurt sauce.

REVIEWS OF The Dockmaster's House

D Hussain (4 November 2009)

They don’t serve your usual Indian fare, but the dishes are very flavoursome. The décor and atmosphere is fantastic except the chairs, which didn't get the same 5 star treatment like the rest of the restaurant. The waiters are very attentive and worth the service charge. A bit on the pricey side but the experience is worth that bit extra.

I always thought the Dockmaster's house building had amazing potential for a fine dining place, and guess what, the owner has done it. The mixture of the old architecture of this classified building has been very successfully embedded with a modern expansion at the back. The members of staff were very friendly from the onset. The food was very tasty and beautifully presented. The atmosphere is very nice, the design is simple and attractive and not noisy at all, which make it a very good place to take a date. There are several bars within the building with nice cocktails as well and also a very good variety of whisky’s and fine alcohols. For me, Dockmaster's House ticked all the right boxes, food nicely priced, very friendly and competent service, beautiful décor, quiet and cosy. All these elements made it a very enjoyable experience and left me with a big smile on my face and with the nice feeling of having found another gem to add to my growing collection of great value for money places in London, and they don't come that often.
