The Duke's Head
High Street, Hatfield Broad Oak, Bishop's Stortford, CM22 7HH
The Duke's Head fits the definition of what a classic village pub should be - full of character, a convivial atmosphere, varied drinks list and traditional food. Proprietors Justin and Liz Flodman invite diners to discover glorious British cuisine with a twist, prepared with much love and attention to detail. You could bring your canine friend for a brief interlude at the bar and then proceed to navigate the rest of the countryside. Those who possess a hankering after things meaty will be pleased to find plenty of local ingredients and fresh cuts on the menu like the braised 10oz feather blade steak, slow roast 'Great Garnetts' pork belly and 'Sweetlands' traditional pork sausages with wholegrain mustard mash and caramelised onion gravy. The Duke's Head fits the definition of what a classic village pub should be - full of character, a convivial atmosphere, varied drinks list and traditional food. For that sweet fix at the end of the meal an English lavender crème brûlée or cranberry sticky toffee pudding should do the trick.
'Small people' with grown up tastes have a separate menu that includes a smaller portion of anything off the main menu.

REVIEWS OF The Duke's Head
Two Poms (20 November 2010)
The Duke's Head at Hatfield Broad Oak is a delightful pub close to Stansted Airport with a chef who knows about real food! Justin Flodman is a man with a mission - to bring fresh, imaginative and delicious food to his customers. Team this with a well thought out wine list and some very good beers and you have the perfect pub restaurant. His wife Liz and the rest of the staff are charming and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. For lunch from the small plates, try the crab risotto or the bubble and squeak or if you are a little more peckish go for the Wensleydale suet pudding with wild mushroom fricasse and try and leave room for one of ‘the Duke's’ desserts. Yummy! We love it here.
Tony The Foodie (13 November 2010)
I have searched a long time for a place like The Duke's Head. Food cooked with passion, locally sourced and imaginative menus, all served in a relaxed yet professional manner. Everything is cooked freshly to order so be prepared to wait, but boy, it is worth it. To compliment, a well researched and eclectic wine list served by knowledgeable and confident waitrons. All in all, a rare find in today’s day and age of mediocre and chain pubs. Long thrive The Duke's Head.
