The Feather Inn source all their ingredients almost exclusively locally, and it infuses the daily changing menu with both a seasonal and traditional flavour at the same time. Their organic bread, puddings and pies are all homemade.

You could try the meal with a cream of plum tomato soup, a Caesar salad of Doddington's cheese or even chicken liver pate with chutney and organic toast. The main course could be goat's cheese, chestnut and wild mushroom pie, royal kidney heritage potatoes and buttered greens or grilled Stamford ham twenty eight day aged sirloin or fillet of beef, chunky chips, garden leaf salad and béarnaise. Perhaps, sample the local cheese, and round off your meal with summer fruit compote, greengages crumble with vanilla custard, or settle for Wheelbirk's icecream in wild cherry or dark chocolate flavours.

Voted a finalist in the recent UK TV Food Local Hero competition, the restaurant has made an impact on the local dining scene. So make sure you book in advance and step into the world of seriously good food.

REVIEWS OF The Feathers Inn

Mr C J Proud (1 August 2010)

Due to the obscene amount of positive reviews, I decided to visit The Feathers to see what the fuss was about. We pre-booked and although fifteen minutes late arrived to be seated immediately. We ordered our drinks which arrived quickly except a coffee which seemed to be forgotten, we received an apology and were not charged for the coffee not that we expected or wanted that. Our meals were fish and chips, and sausage and mash. The fish and chips were nice but no better than other pubs but portion size small in comparison. Again the sausage and mash was only a small portion but I have to say flavour wise it was one of the best meals I've ever eaten in my life. Absolute perfection and I'm generally not a lover of mash potato. For dessert, we had apricot and almond, tart and chocolate brownie which were both delicious. We'd definitely go back but next time on a Sunday as I think the three courses for £17 seems fantastic value for money. All the staff who served our small group had fantastic customer service skills.

Rebecca Grogan (17 January 2009)

We had a superb Sunday lunch at the Feathers, it was very tasty indeed. We had the beef, which was lovely. Just read the previous review. They do not serve steaks of beef but slices of rib. I am not sure if the reviewer realises what this means. Rib is a cut of meat that is very special; it’s most definitely the best cut of beef for roasting. It has fat through it and around it which you do not eat, but imparts flavour and keeps it juicy. Cuts of meat are a personal preference but for us it would be rib every time and preferably not well done. As for the staff I did not have this experience, in fact they went out of their way to make sure our children were happy with their choices and that their meals arrived quickly. They brought a high chair over as soon as we came in and made us feel at home. This is not the usual response from stuffy places. When we explained that my partner did not like parsnips they did not flinch in offering us an alternative and brought the vegetables separate so that we could select the ones we wanted. We were offered more gravy and more vegetables too. In fact there was no fault to be found in the service in spite of them being incredibly busy - thumbs up from us. We are already booked back in next Sunday and looking forward to it.
