The Foundry Wine Bar
1 Saw Mill Yard, Round Foundry, Water Lane, Leeds, LS11 5WH
One of the more cheering aspects of regeneration of old properties is the salvation of buildings that only a few years ago would just have been swept away without a second thought being given to their possible re-use. For once in a way common sense has prevailed at this site in Leeds, before it was too late and some semblance of the past is being retained. Needless to say it was once a foundry, but now the loudest sounds can be attributed to entertainment, laughter and people enjoying the atmosphere. Two Leeds United supporters took it upon themselves to open a wine bar and a restaurant in the heart of the award-winning Round Foundry development in Holbeck, and this addition to the social scene is the result. One of the more cheering aspects of regeneration of old properties is the salvation of buildings that only a few years ago would just have been swept away without a second thought being given to their possible re-use. An eclectic menu offers duck liver pate with Cumberland sauce, half a roast pheasant wrapped in bacon, with bread sauce, followed by treacle tart with ice cream. Portions are, to put it mildly, generous. Mark Palmer, restaurant critic for The Daily Telegraph felt that John Major's vision of a classless society was perhaps not as improbable as some had thought, and much of this has to be due to Phil Richardson, one of the enterprise partners who is a natural 'people' man, widely loved and revered in those parts.
As Robert Cockcroft, writing in the Yorkshire Post, put it, "It's the sort of stuff that Jeeves would advise Bertie Wooster to enjoy at his London club".

REVIEWS OF The Foundry Wine Bar
Kirsten Day (17 February 2010)
Sadly, we were not able to eat at The Foundry as they were fully booked on the evening in question but we had a glass of wine, some excellent olives and paprika chorizo. We then spent a hugely enjoyable hour at the bar being made to feel exceptionally welcome by the owners. The menu was varied and interesting and the food coming out of the kitchen smelt and looked wonderful - we will certainly return to eat in the future.
Craig Humble (28 February 2009)
This is an honest brasserie with robust flavoursome food and a considered wine list. I have eaten there at lunchtime on the terrace and inside in the evening. Both times I found an attentive team delivering classic dishes consistently well. It’s priced in keeping with its target clientele but you can eat well there for a £10 including drinks or you can have a blow out and find top end quality in both food and wine on the menu. As this side of town develops, The Foundry will be a keystone for any regular diner in Leeds.
