The Fox & Hounds Inn

Goldsborough, Whitby, YO21 3RX

On the face of it there is a certain strangeness about one of the best dining pubs in the country being located in the middle of nowhere, having no website, and doing very little in the way of advertising, yet being fully booked as a matter of course. Until you realise that it is overlooked by the spectral Whitby Abbey from its storm swept headland, where folklore has it that Dracula came ashore, at which point more or less anything becomes possible. Having negotiated the winding lane and found the pub, you will also find ex-Ivy chef Jason Davies, ably backed by his wife Sue, who has London restaurant experience at Odettes, dispensing between them the sort of quality cooking that wowed them in London for long enough.

In Whitby you will often have to join a long queue to buy their fabled fish and chips. At the Fox and Hounds you can enjoy seared haddock fillet with puy lentils and grilled fennel, served with a rosemary and anchovy sauce, or superb linguine made with crab, chilli and lemon. Boar sausages are a speciality.

With 34 covers life can be quite, shall we say, friendly, but that's part of the charm and it goes well with the unreconstructed décor and concentration on the food.

No shadow of doubt this is one for the little black book, two pages after D for Dracula.

REVIEWS OF The Fox & Hounds Inn

Colin B (31 May 2011)

This is a hidden gem. Booking is essential as this is a small quaint restaurant with a loyal following. The food is exceptional – the menu which changes by the week combines fresh local fish, high quality meats selected for flavour and high quality ingredients – this is not pub food, this is high quality food cooked and served with passion. The chef has a natural ability to put together flavours and ingredients that really work well – there is a lot of Italian influence in the food combined with a modern classical outlook. The food is kept fresh and vibrant with a typical offering of 3 starters, 3 mains, and 3 desserts allowing the food to be very fresh and the menu to change by the week. Home baked bread adds a lovely touch. I had hare ragu pasta – something at home we do not have the time to spend all day preparing – it was delightful and well balanced – followed by pan fried halibut on a bed of garlic and herb crushed potatoes with an anchovy drizzle – finishing with a delightful lemon tart.

The wine list for a small restaurant features some well thought out wines with a range of value for money to some nice French white and red burgundies and a great sweet list of wines including vin santos’, pedro ximinez and wines.

Onto the service – the quality of the food is matched with the quality of the front of house. A friendly, knowledgeable and efficient front of house deliver real personal service. Nothing is a problem or trouble for this department – remembering names of returning guests, even recalling favourite wines coupled with a thought for the finer touches - Fever Tree Tonic with the G&T with reasons for it, open fire - and details make the whole experience worth making an effort to visit this restaurant. If you are in the Whitby area make the effort to travel 6 miles and have a meal on the cliffs overlooking Whitby harbour, you will not be disappointed, I promise you.

We are regulars under the care and skill of Jason and Sue and now consider ourselves as ‘friends of the family’ rather than customers. The food at The Fox is always simple, fresh and cooked ‘just so’, especially the fish. The menu changes every week depending on what Jason has sourced so we never become bored. The wine list is short but has quality throughout. A gem of a restaurant, we would like to keep the secret of this special place to ourselves but instead urge you to support Jason and Sue and give it a try. You will not be disappointed.
