The George & Vulture

63 Pitfield Street, London, N1 6BU

Situated in the heart of Hoxton, an area that boasts a collection of trendy pubs and bars, The George and Vulture has built up a loyal client base which continues to return for some straightforward Italian cooking. Inside, an open log fire, pleasant strains of piano music and a buzzy atmosphere complete the picture. Braciole alla messinese, beef meat roll skewers Sicilian style, lasagne with meat ragù, and controfilleto, an 8 oz plain grilled sirloin steak, lead the way for meat lovers. Pizza Sarda, with spicy southern Italian salami and speck - northern Italian smoked mountain ham - with gorgonzola, slips down a treat, while a simple foccacia is spruced up with flavours of ham and taleggio or mixed cheese and chicken and arrives as a sandwich, ideal for lunchtime.

REVIEWS OF The George & Vulture

Hoxtonite (25 March 2009)

How this little gem has been missed on the radar is beyond me! A huge Italian chef in his whites served me quite the most delicious pasta I've had in a while - it truly tasted like it was made by an Italian mama on the scene of a Godfather movie. I've been back and had a very good steak as well - Italian style of course. A very cheap menu, and both times great options on the specials board. Lovely atmosphere in the pub as well - the barman/landlord recognised me second time round for a little chat and let me try a couple of the wines. Hopefully a good Chianti to match the food next time - my suggestion! Definitely worth a visit or two for honest, delicious and great value Italian.
