REVIEWS OF The Ginger Pig
Daddy X (21 July 2011)
I have been longing to visit The Ginger Pig in Hove for a long time, and a visit from my sister and niece provided the ideal opportunity to try it out. I was very impressed. What a refreshing change to be given bread and tap water without having to ask! There was a very wide choice of dishes available, from the set menu to the a la carte and the specials board. The service was attentive, friendly and efficient without being pushy. Hot plates were an indication that this was a restaurant which paid attention to the ‘little’ details. Cheap it was not, but then, in my experience, you get what you pay for. One minor problem – it was not the restaurant's fault, was the children present. I suppose we have to accept children in restaurants these days, but can't these self-centred parents understand that, noise apart, allowing their little dears to run round the restaurant as if it was the local playgroup is both dangerous and, for other patrons, it is extremely annoying. I shall go back in the evening, when, hopefully, the little dears will be tucked up in bed.

The staff are always really friendly, bread and menus always arrive fast and the waiters tend to be smiley and unobtrusive, but friendly. Overall the menu is really tempting – I could easily have had most things on there. There’s a good variety and with the specials there’s lots of choice. Some interesting and unusual offerings as well. We had the house white which was a chardonnay. It was a bit sharper than I like as I like chardonnay to be more buttery but nice and light and citrusy. Very pleasant. Duck liver and foie gras parfait for a starter - perfect amount - the right proportion of toast to parfait. They had done a scoop of parfait so it looked like ice cream and had sprinkled something like pink salt on top - very cute. Lovely delicate flavour complimented by the sweet chutney. Couldn’t fault it. The pork fillet main was great with pork rillettes, cauliflower puree, fondant potato and Savoy cabbage with smoked bacon and gravy. The pork fillet was cooked perfectly a little pink so it was still moist. If I was to really pick holes I would say that the smokiness of the bacon was a tiny bit overpowering but overall a really good dish. I was too full for pudding but there was a fabulous selection - really good.
