The Grainstore Restaurant

30 Victoria Street, 1st Floor, Edinburgh, EH1 2JW

Located in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, The Grain Store - started in 1991 - monitors on the best of Scottish produce and cooking in a setting which conjures up thoughts of an historic auld Reekie and Scotland's colourful heritage. The cooking, whilst recognising the traditions of Scottish cuisine, does not hesitate to innovate, with a seasonal menu that takes the best of mountain, sea and field retaining its flavours for the discerning palate. With Ian Mellis, respected local cheesemonger next door, I leave you to consider the possibilities for the cheeseboard. The wine list makes highly attractive reading and even more compulsive drinking with careful selections from across the globe.

REVIEWS OF The Grainstore Restaurant

C&N (9 March 2007)

I am surprised there is no review on this restaurant yet, as it seems it's been there for more than fifteen years. I can only imagine people want to keep it as their secret fabulous restaurant so that it doesn't become all too busy/too trendy/and finally less of an exceptional place. As I write this review, I wonder if I shouldn't just keep it to myself as well!

We were there for lunch today. The setting is really lovely with antique furniture, in an old vaulted building and flowers on the window sills that just add the final touch. The food was extraordinary (we took the 3 course set menu, £13), probably one of the best I ever had in Edinburgh. We were only very slightly disappointed by the chocolate cake, probably because the 'nougat glace with apple coulis' was so wonderful. The service was very good as well, we decided to award it an 8.5/10 mark (and I am a very fussy French, I can assure you!).
