The Gun

27 Coldharbour, Docklands, London, E14 9NS

Housed in a Grade II listed building and winner of the Good Pub Guide's award for 'London's Best Dining Pub', The Gun brings a unique combination of traditional elegance and contemporary charm to the Docklands. Following a fire accident in 2001, this popular pub-restaurant emerged from the ashes and owners Tom and Ed Martin with a little help from the English Heritage have helped The Gun bounce back to life. There is now a spacious dining area, a dark wood bar, two private dining rooms and a riverside terrace that would get the average developer gibbering with emotion, with serious views of the Thames, Greenwich Park, even the Millennium Dome. The kitchen team places much emphasis high quality British food, fresh fish daily delivered from Billingsgate and delicious game dishes in season.

On the dinner menu expect to find starters of brown shrimp and bacon croquettes with sauce gribiche, or pork and green peppercorn terrine with fig chutney. Main coursers inspire with a salt crusted Cumbrian chateaubriand for two, and seared loin of Yorkshire venison. Puddings steer much the same course, offering a classic chocolate truffle cake, a well-balanced coffee and Bailey's pannacotta, and some really interesting British cheeses. A comprehensive wine and beer list signals the wide social appeal of The Gun.

REVIEWS OF The Gun

TS (11 October 2007)

It’s the perfect place to bring clients to. The staff are very professional and the food is delicious. It is also within walking distance from Canary Wharf, which is very convenient. All my clients are always delighted to eat there. I would be returning soon.

VH (2 August 2007)

I've really tried to like this pub as it is our local, and it has a great location with a good selection of beers. (No crisps though - which should say it all really) My partner and myself have been on a couple of Sundays with visiting relatives for lunch, and both the times it was over-priced and disappointing. The quality of the food and the attitude of the staff too were a dissatisfaction. I went again with a friend this evening and have vowed not to go back - arrogant bar staff who ignore you, and the bar food menu that's so limited it is laughable (burger and chips, foie gras Cornish pasty, or roast beef sarnie). When I eventually managed to get the attention of a barman and ask him if it was possible to get a table I was told no, and similarly we couldn't order from the restaurant menu at our bar table. We ate at the outside Portuguese terrace, which was good, but again over-priced and very slow service. On returning to the bar to get a coffee (after growing tired of waiting fifteen minutes to be asked outside) I discovered that the table we'd been sat at in the bar has been laid-up and three people were enjoying food from the restaurant menu there. The attitude of the staff sucks - will not be returning, and wouldn't recommend anyone else to go, unless you're horribly pretentious and have the patience of a saint!
