The High Cross Inn

High Cross Brow, Broughton-in-Furness, nr Bowness-on-Windermere, LA20 6ES

In the midst of the beautiful Lake District National Park, lies a small inn that offers glorious views over some of its best natural scenery. The High Cross sits on the brow of a hill overlooking both Broughton-in-Furness and the Duddon valley. It's a fine example of a typical Lakeland pub with oak beams, thick stone walls and an open fire. The conservatory restaurant serves modern British food, created from locally sourced produce, fresh venison and sea bass. Amongst the many options on the menu, lightly smoked fillet of beef with oxtail hash, horseradish dumplings and essence of port or pan seared duck breast, sautéed orange and Savoy cabbage with black cherry sauce might find favour.

They serve Jennings, Moorhouses, Cumbrian Legendary ales, a range of continental lagers and over twenty different wines. There are six guest rooms all of which have recently been redecorated.

It’s not very near to Bowness but they serve really good food – I had a top quality fillet of beef magic. The views over the Duddon estuary were spectacular.
