The Horse & Trumpet

Old Green, Medbourne, nr Market Harborough, LE16 8DX

Located in the rolling countryside of hunting Leicestershire the Horse and Trumpet is a good example of an estate pub that has come places and is now essentially a restaurant with rooms looking out over the village bowling green complete with its colony of ducks. Starters set the pace with a foie gras parfait, smoked duck with pear celeriac and hazelnut, a ballotine of quail with confit chicken, goat's cheese and grape jelly, or a lobster cannelloni with soft lettuce, peas, bacon and spiced apple veloute. That much maligned, but now happily better understood cut, pork belly is served with a langoustine cannelloni, black pudding and cauliflower to make a robust and delicious dish, but for sheer effect the roast chump of tender lamb with braised red cabbage and raisins, fondant potato and a cordon of mustard sauce really rouses the tastebuds.

When I tell you that it is not unknown for some of the puddings to arrive with mustard seeds in the ice cream you will detect a note of originality in the proceedings, but for sheer degeneracy order the apple strudel, made with sweet Jerusalem artichoke panna cotta, confit lemon and green apple sorbet.

A fairly brief and interesting wine list offers six or so by the glass.

REVIEWS OF The Horse & Trumpet

Jo Parish (27 May 2007)

My husband had the vegetarian option for each course. I had the same, except for the main course and main dessert, where I received (by prior arrangement) a vegan alternative. In addition to the starter, main and dessert, there were several small 'intermission' courses. We both found the food absolutely delicious - novel but coherent, perfectly seasoned, and exquisitely presented. The portions were minute but strangely satisfying. 'Space dust' on the ice cream provided a retro touch. There was a fair range of wines; we ordered several by the glass and were pleased with all of them. The service was friendly, accommodating and professional. Several of the staff were young and learning on the job so it was not always entirely polished; however they were clearly striving to provide high quality service and largely succeeded.

I have not eaten vegetarian/vegan food of that quality in a restaurant before. We paid £90 for an evening meal including wine for one person and would go to The Horse and Trumpet regularly if we could afford it. I would recommend this restaurant highly to anyone in the area.

El Bulli and the Fat Duck watch out .There's a new kid on the Block and it's here in Leicestershire. Not only is the food excellent and imaginative it is also art on a plate. The lunch menu is very good value for money and there is also a tasting menu. This place deserves its entry in the Good Food Guide but should get more than 6. Believe me I criticise when it is deserved but I can give nothing but praise to the Horse and Trumpet.
