The King & Thai

The Forester Arms, Broseley, Telford, TF12 5DL

For many years The Foresters Arms has been a steady English pub in an estate village when suddenly pow!! out of nearby Ironbridge came The King and Thai looking for a new location, and the rest is relatively recent history. It is proof of the regard in which they were held that customers from their old location have followed them up the hill to Broseley. Much of their success is due to the quality of their ingredients, with a good number coming direct from Thailand, including the stunningly beautiful orchids on the tables as well as chillies, lemongrass and secret herbs and spices. The meats come from Shropshire, all carefully selected and accredited. Eggs are barn fresh and the vegetables are purchased locally.

In good Thai fashion the décor is restful and undemanding, no ornate busy stuff just a restful, candlelit interior that sets the scene for some serious palate pleasing.

REVIEWS OF The King & Thai

James Day (17 January 2011)

I have had a fondness for Thai food for a while now and thought it is about time I introduced my mum’s less adventurous palate to its delights. She was a little apprehensive but was convinced to try the King and Thai in Broseley after hearing so many good things about it. Greeted in true Thai style by a waitress in traditional dress we were made to feel instantly welcome. We were shown to the relaxing bar area they have created, with its soft brown leather furnishings and rich plum colour scheme which is complimented by delicate orchids, making the décor as warm as the welcome. Another smart and friendly waitress seated us and promptly took our drinks order. We were spoilt for choice when we were offered the a la carte, specials and taster menus. There was an extensive range of spicy soups, creamy curries, stir fries and Thai style noodles all with a helpful key to indicate the spiciness of each dish. My mum was surprised at how easy the menu was to read, all with detailed descriptions, with no unusual words – if we were stuck, the waitress explained that we could ask for help, or suggested she could bring us a selection from their ‘Thai tasting platter’ and make it very mild if we preferred, as beginners. My mum felt at ease and we decided on the taster menu which included six dishes with rice.

We did not have to wait long before our waitress reappeared with a tray laden with eight square bowls each full to the brim with dishes of overwhelming colour and fragrance. Edible flowers carved from carrots added eastern authenticity which was confirmed when we saw Suree, the chef, who is of Thai origin, modestly accepting praise from delighted diners. It was also reassuring to read that all Suree’s meats are sourced from local suppliers, even the butcher in Broseley, and the vegetables are from Telford – the chicken is also farm assured, which was evident in the tender flavour of the meats. Looking around the restaurant, many people appeared local too, as well as some who had evidently travelled a long way to experience this true taste of Thailand – the atmosphere was very friendly with a ‘family’ buzz from all the staff. For a genuine Asian experience we used chopsticks and began our Thai feast with thick, succulent king prawns in crispy breadcrumbs doused in a chunky sweet chilli sauce. Next we savoured the buttery kick of the chicken satay on skewers and the light fresh flavours of the crisp spring rolls. The Thai green curry was perhaps the most fragrant dish of all, the zing of lemongrass infused with coconut milk created a light and creamy curry bursting with flavour. The stir fried spicy beef with peppers was a richer dish with a dark fiery sauce and intense flavour. The stir fried pork was tender and tasty with medium spice and crunchy vegetables. The portions were plentiful and accompanied by soft steamed rice. We were tempted by the dessert menu and I chose the Bailey’s and dark chocolate mousse cake while the newly converted Thai food fanatic went for the fried ice cream. I was presented with a generous wedge of thick creamy mousse with a dark chocolate sponge base. My plate was drizzled with raspberry coulis and finished with strawberries and dates. It tasted as indulgent as it looked. My guest had golden crispy parcels which crackled open to reveal oozing ice cream mingled with mango coulis.

It was the perfect introduction to Thai cuisine, the taster menu offered such contrasting dishes that there is something to suit all tastes. The venue is suited to any occasion as the accommodating menu welcomes families whilst the intimate fireplace seating makes it an attractive option for couples. The King and Thai delivers high quality authentic food with the delicate touches and excellent service that makes this an unforgettable Thai experience for both beginner and connoisseur. We will certainly be back, and may even venture deeper into the intriguing menu next time, and ‘up the spice level’ a notch or two.

I’ve eaten there many times and it’s fantastic, always as good as the time before. The food is fresh and clean with taste beyond compare. I love this place. The staff are friendly and the place is always clean and well presented. If you haven't eaten there you don't know what you’re missing. Go give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
