A name like The Mermaids Tail may bring in an element of surprise and the title carries suggestions of fish and chips, but before you pass it off as just another chippy down the road, think again. There's much to be said about this Leicester Square venue. The décor is a good way to start with the chequered table cloth bringing in a café feel, but the marine touches seek attention and there are plenty of mermaids on the walls to keep you company.

All their fish comes from sustainable stocks with traceable provenance, and you could even choose how it is battered - gluten-free, pale ale beer batter or the exclusive vodka, lemon and chilli. As you study the menu you might encounter crispy coated chicken strips, salmon and cod fishcakes and breaded prawns. Beef and chicken also announce their presence in the form of an Angus T-bone, fillet or rump, and chicken fricassée or Carolina.
