REVIEWS OF The Mundy Bois

Wood J (18 January 2009)

I have been to the Mundy Bois many times over the past 3 years. Firstly, I would definitely say that since the new chefs were hired a year ago, the food and service quality has gone up. The variety is just what a local, country pub-restaurant needs – gastro dining, eat your heart out. The location is ideal, with a fantastic huge beer garden with a playground for kids; it’s beautiful in the summer. You can’t find a beer garden quite like this for miles - believe me, I've looked. The food is always fresh; we’ve experienced the sirloin steaks, lobster, sea bass, burgers, faggots and many more and every time it’s been a delight. I can also attest they definitely do not use Bisto gravy. I will admit the new ‘young’ service staff can be amateurs at best – however, you must remember what your first job was like. Experience has to stem from somewhere. Adequate service in this establishment is extremely rare, but is it ever perfect anywhere? We are human after all. However, I have experienced the staff to be always polite, cheerful and very attentive. I’m a big fan of the Sunday lunches – it’s a must - affordable, filling and attracts a great atmosphere. Must add - in the winter they have real log fires, which gives the pub a cosy ambience, reminds me of home.

I wish I had read the previous review before booking The Mundy Bois for Sunday lunch and we had a similar experience, which was also awful. On arrival the waitress showed us to our table, and we were left there for over ten minutes without being asked if we wanted drinks, or even given menus. We then had to wait thirty minutes for our starters. I had ordered chicken and mandarin pâté on warm toast with red onion marmalade. It arrived with brown rolls, since they had run out of toast by 2pm, and there was no onion marmalade. When I asked the waitress about this she brought some onion relish. I could detect no hint of mandarin in the pâté, which was unusually soft - albeit tasty. My main course was billed as pork belly on apple mash, with a local cider sauce. In fact the apple sauce was separate from the mash, and the sauce appeared to be a Bisto gravy, with no hint of any cider in it. My wife's main course of salmon fillets was so overcooked that they were totally dry, tasteless, and inedible. Furthermore it was served on rice rather than on crushed new potatoes as stated on the menu. We sent the salmon back and were not charged for it. However, the final insult was that the bill was added up incorrectly, the total was £6 too high. Even after correcting this we still felt overcharged for what we had been provided. Needless to say, we were not brave enough to stay for desserts, and coffee, and will not be returning.
