There are locations for eating, the Riverside Restaurant, which is a la carte, the River Room and the Garden Room. Your only problem is one of choice. Under the overall guidance of consultant chef Steven Saunders, Fellow Master Chef of Great Britain, the evening a la carte carries a well balanced menu, one of those that leaves you totally at a loss to make rational decisions. An enjoyable meal can begin with starters of smoked eel and vanilla cured trout with celeriac, beetroot and semi gel before moving on to grilled calves liver with foie gras, beetroot and Swede. If the dessert selection beckons, there's wild cherry parfait with walnuts, fresh cherry, glazed figs and sabayon or cheese board to help, complete the picture of a satisfying meal.

REVIEWS OF The New Mill

Mrs M Wokingham (22 February 2009)

The New Mill is in a wonderful setting at the edge of the river, I have received some good reviews about them. They are offering the table d'hote menu, so I thought I would give it a go for a nice midweek lunch. The food was very nice, however I thought table d’hote was a set meal, very disappointed not to have any vegetables or potatoes at all, also no one pointed out that we would need them, and did not expect to pay extra for them. A small apple salad to start and a field mushroom for the main meal is not quite enough for me, but the dessert made up for it, try the chocolate pot, it’s divine. I would also like to add we were seated in another area from everyone else in the restaurant, and by the serving hatch, even though there were plenty of tables in main area over looking the river. I can only put this down to having the table d’hote menu while everyone else was having the normal menu? Would I go again? Yes, but only if I had the normal a la carte menu, so I feel they should not offer a less expensive menu if they are going to treat you differently, hubby said he won’t go again.

Sue and Paul (1 February 2008)

While I agree that it does provides a relaxed atmosphere, attentive service and lovely quaint surroundings, I could not add the food to the list of marvellous things. We had the three course set menu at £27.50 per head and I was a little surprised by the lack of choices. While the starters and desserts were passable, the mains were shabby. Perhaps the restaurant excels in slow cooked meat but definitely not fish nor greens. There are country pubs that would do a far better meal and would provide you with a decent plate of seasonal vegetables instead of charging you - full marks for atmosphere, not much on the food front.
