The Old Harkers Arms

1 Russell Street, Chester, CH3 5AL

Prior to 1985, the Old Harkers Arms was the basement of an old warehouse overlooking the Shropshire Union Canal. The building was derelict. Using reclaimed materials such as chemistry lab counters and old mahogany doors to make the bars, adds to the feeling that the pub has in fact been there for at least a century: in the nicest sense! The pub has a good range of well-kept real ales, which are helpfully described on a chalkboard. A good choice of wines is also available. The food is good and freshly cooked, with a menu that changes regularly. Starters might include tomato soup; ham hock terrine with curried apple chutney; salmon and smoked haddock fishcake; or poached eggs, spinach and hollandaise sauce on a muffin.

REVIEWS OF The Old Harkers Arms

Andrew Chadwick (23 September 2010)

Popular with the tourists for a good reason! Food excellent and what a choice of real ales! A must when in town!

Tom (11 January 2005)

Sympathetically converted canalside warehouse that makes an interesting setting for a bar / restaurant. The atmosphere is that of a well patronised pub that serves good quality fare, but makes no pretensions to be an all singing and dancing gastro delight. This is also emphasised in the prices that are reasonable. Service element could be improved upon and more attentive and better trained staff would be a definite plus point. Another improvement would be to change the menu more regularly.
