REVIEWS OF The Ostrich

Guy Burtenshaw (20 July 2010)

I visited the Ostrich as part of a large family celebration. I have to say the food was some of the best I have experienced and the steak just melted in your mouth. Considering we were a party of twelve, the way all of our courses arrived at the same time was pretty impressive. I would recommend the Ostrich to anyone.

A Rising Star! There is lots of competition for the most impressive element of this dining experience, firstly the Ostrich Inn is one of the oldest original coaching inns in Britain, it's a beautiful and interesting building superbly fitted out. The welcome was warm, the service was professional and friendly. But the star was the food, on reading the menu and website you learn the head chef is Paul O'Neill is newly appointed, we had a short chat with him where we learned he's been here three months and he makes everything from scratch with fresh ingredients. There is an excellent regular menu, along with a few daily specials. My two dining partners had the twice baked mature cheddar and pacetta soufle, the deep fried whitebait and I had the homemade country pate with chutney. All three were beautifully presented and perfect sized portions, the soufle was perfect, the whitebait were crispy outside, soft in the middle and served with the most delicious garlic aoili. My pate was as good as the best country pate I have ever had, and the Chutney was exquisite. For mains one of us had braised Moroccan shoulder of lamb while two of us made the excellent choice from the specials menu of smoked haddock Scotch Egg served on a bed of cream leeks, the sausage meat was replaced by a firm smoked haddock mousse, rolled in breadcrumbs, deep fried, and served with a soft yolk - it was amazing. We finished up with a tasting platter of five deserts to share, all of which were lovely, but the one I just can't get out of my head is the peanut butter parfait. Although my visit to The Ostrich was motivated by one of my dining partners who lives much nearer than I do, I will be taking my wife there, despite it being 25 miles away, she's just got to taste the Peanut Butter Parfait.
