The Other Place
41 Fore Street, Fowey, PL23 1AQ
After the longstanding success of his original Bistro style restaurant Sam's, Sam Sixton decided to open Sam's The Other Place, just a little further up Fore Street. This is a more relaxed upstairs restaurant with the most stunning river views. The ambience is less hectic and noisy than their sister establishment, offering locally sourced produce to compliment their exciting and innovative dishes. The interior is contemporary, but cosy, offering a unique eating experience. The staff are all local and many have been with them since they established Sam's in 1987. Sam's The Other Place has an ever-changing seasonal menu which includes much local shellfish and fish along with interesting meat and game dishes. After the longstanding success of his original Bistro style restaurant Sam's, Sam Sixton decided to open Sam's The Other Place, just a little further up Fore Street. REVIEWS OF The Other Place
Laura Gahan (6 June 2008)
We went there to eat during Easter 2008, having heard lots of good stuff about it from friends. The food was exceptional - fresh and beautifully served, and with a seasonal menu, there was plenty to choose from. The ambience was lovely too. The service was just what we like in a restaurant - attentive but not hovering over tables, which I hate. We stayed much later and had more wine. This is a friendly place and while wandering the next day, I had their fish and chips for lunch, which was outstanding. I will certainly be recommending it.

Every time we come on our frequent visits to Cornwall, my husband and I make a special effort to book a table at this lovely, friendly, atmospheric restaurant. Sometimes we bring friends, but usually we want to keep it to ourselves! There's always a warm welcome and a quietly buzzy atmosphere - it's nearly always packed with families, couples or parties, tucking in to gorgeous, well-cooked, locally-sourced food.
Our problem is always what to choose from the extensive menu, which has a seasonal list to add to the choice; I'm ashamed to say I've had the same main course three times in a row! On this occasion I started off with soft-shelled crab - delectably served tempura-style with sesame seeds and a mouth-watering sweet chilli dip. I wanted them to go on forever. My hubby enjoyed (yet again) fish-cakes, cooked to perfection.
Main course for him was a Portuguese-style fish stew served on a bed of mash, and I ordered the legendary prawn, scallop and langoustine salad - a heavenly plateful of leaves and sea-food: the scallops - caught locally - are gargantuan; the prawns and langoustines fresh and sweet. Not obligatory, but totally necessary, are a giant bowlful of skinny chips.
No space for puddings (on this occasion) but they usually never fail to impress. As does the wine list and the attentive and knowledgeable staff.
On previous occasions we have eaten the divine Fowey River mussels, Surf and Turf (bring it back to the menu please!) fantastic prawn cocktail and the Thai combo. It's all so yummy I can't wait to go back and try something different... perhaps.
