The Palmerston Bar & Dining Room
91 Lordship Lane, East Dulwich, London, SE22 8EP
Not to be confused with its counterpart up in Highgate, The Palmerston has taken its place in the ranks of the gastropub, a prime example of a graduate with all the right qualifications. Well equipped with the sort of décor that is a feature of so many old London pubs, the new owners have wisely retained most of them - whatever others may say, many people like the familiar, so the likes of chandeliers and brown leather seating are all part of the welcome. However the line is drawn when it comes to the menu and sauted foie gras with grilled fig and Chardonnay vinegar, fillet of wild sea bass with Swiss chard, red wine sauce and gremolata, and sauted rabbit with borlotti beans, tomato and salsa verde all reflect changing tastes. Not to be confused with its counterpart up in Highgate, The Palmerston has taken its place in the ranks of the gastropub, a prime example of a graduate with all the right qualifications. The definition of a gastropub, particularly when it comes to food, is a matter that will fuel discussion for a long time to come, and has no place here, but let's put it this way, many a restaurant would be glad to serve food of this quality and imagination. To ram the point home try their roast grouse with game chips, bread sauce and juniper gravy.
Nor is the wine list lacking in quality and imagination, with the two leading merchants Bibendum and Liberty well to the fore. The response so far on this workmanlike venture is well up the scale, and rumour has it that more similar projects are on the way.

REVIEWS OF The Palmerston Bar & Dining Room
Charlotte (9 December 2007)
The food and service were excellent. The meat actually melted in my mouth and my starter of foie gras with egg yolk was amazing. It’s definitely recommended, and worth spending a little extra money as it was really good.
Ceefer (24 May 2006)
I've eaten at the Palmerston on a number of occasions and hope to go there tonight with my partner and some friends who haven't tried it before. The food has been of a consistently good standard and the staff helpful, humorous and friendly. I particularly love the foie gras although I'm not too keen on the pancakes that accompany it. The wine list is fairly acceptable, with a range to suit most palates. The menu is regularly changed and to date I have not had a single complaint from any of my friends who have dined there.
The menu at The Palmerston is of a high enough standard to be on a par with and at times surpass Franklins and Le Chardon, both of which are within easy walking distance, along Lordship Lane. If you like good food, good dining music and a relaxed vibe, then try The Palmerston!
