The Peasant
240 St John Street, London, EC1V 4PH
There's nothing rustic about The Peasant on St. John Street, but instead you could expect a dining or drinking experience that is definitely not in the realm of the ordinary. This former gin palace has been lovingly restored by Wright brothers, Gregory and Patrick, while some of the original features such as 17th century mosaic floors and glazed tile walls have been retained to lend a unique touch. The restaurant upstairs offers a light and airy atmosphere with plenty of old circus memorabilia which add a quirky element to the place. Locally sourced and seasonal produce feature strongly in the dishes and with the Smithfields Market so close by, you know just how fresh everything is. So don't think twice before sampling a starter of truffled duck eggs with English asparagus and soldiers, followed by pan fried pigeon breast with black pudding, red onion tartlet and chump mash and ending with a knickerbocker glory. There's nothing rustic about The Peasant on St. John Street, but instead you could expect a dining or drinking experience that is definitely not in the realm of the ordinary.
