REVIEWS OF The Peter Tavy Inn
Harry Maddock (15 April 2010)
My wife and I had dropped down to Tavistock from Bristol to see my sister. Nostalgia had us retracing trips we used to make with our father when he made deliveries into the country. A drink stop at the Peter Tavy Inn was normal. This was about 60 years ago and we hadn't visited since those days. The Inn itself was idyllic old stone walls, slate floors, great stove fire - old world, but with a sense of modernity in the lay-out and ambience. The pictures on the wall were outstanding, with a local painter, John Hoar, taking pride of place. We mixed up the lunch and evening menus, but this was received with equanimity and pleasantness, and our orders were delivered. Many restaurants are not as accommodating. Our mains were scampi and salad, game pie with a stilton pudding, and salmon fillet, with side vegetable dishes. Everything was excellently prepared and presented. My wife's salmon was the best that she had had for a long while, and my game pie was potent, as game usually is, wholesome and moresome. We finished with traditional ice creams - we were in Devon - and apple and pear crumble. Nothing was left. With drinks, the cost for a two course meal for three, excellently produced, good portions, in delightful surroundings, came out at £56, which we felt was outstanding value. We will be back, and we highly recommend it to others.
