A friend drives his helicopter down specially from Derbyshire to avail himself of the delights of this place, and that's with having to forgo the wine!

REVIEWS OF The Pheasant

Rachell M (1 February 2009)

We were pleased to get a table tonight at short notice on a Saturday. We were seated shortly after we'd made our order. Our starter was quite uninspiring - a concoction of focaccia bread with sprouting broccoli and a poached egg, all wrapped up in a big splurge of balsamic vinegar. We had different main courses. My partner went for the blade of beef with mash and cavolo nero. I tasted it and it was just great. He liked it too. I went for the nut roast, because it seemed unusual, but it disappointed me because I didn't get all the nice vegetables that he did. I had to order mine separately and was essentially a couple of slices of nut loaf with blobs of goat cheese, which made the whole thing too rich, and some watercress, with a couple of roasted baby onions. I would have liked rich gravy, no watercress, and less of the balsamic vinegar which dressed this dish. It is great to have good food in this area and so little competition comparatively, but this visit to The Pheasant was not my best.

A Beaumont (10 October 2008)

We knew that the Pheasant Inn was popular with the Newmarket racing crowd, so on our way home from Birmingham on the A14 we decided to step in. This place was an absolute delight, and we were very lucky to get a table without a reservation. I plumped for the half dozen snails followed by excellent homemade lamb faggots with gingerbread parfait to finish. My wife had the fillet covered in peppercorns. This was done to perfection, and not just with a peppercorn sauce. Everything was superbly cooked and we really liked the menu with the Provence of the meat, the translations, and suggestions about the cooking. It is a refined gastropub, with lovely rooms in a pretty village, yet its close enough to the main road that you won't get lost. I would highly recommend it.
