Established in 1994, Raja of Kent provides an excellent fine Indian and Bangladeshi dining option alongside affordable takeaways. We had a meal at this restaurant on a Friday and on entering we were greeted at the door by the friendly staff. The choice on the menu was wonderful, we were all taken by surprise as the choice was amazing not you’re typical Indian. Loads of very different dishes with game, which was a nice change, we ordered meals we never tried before with pheasant, duck and venison. All were so nicely cooked, tasted beautiful, really good food, not heavy or fatty in any way, everything was above what I expected and would tell everyone to go, you will not be disappointed. I will be going on a regular basis now as we moved to the area a month ago.

Having been there, I can see why The Raja was voted 'Best Indian' in the Kent Restaurant Awards and named one of the top 100 UK Indian Restaurants, when there are 10,000 other in the country. This is a modern establishment sited in a former coaching in on the Benneden Road outside Tenterden and not to be confused with its eponymous suister restaurant in Maidstone. The menu contains most of the usual suspects but for the more adventurous there’s plenty of fish and seafood plus locally shot game - pheasant, vension harin and duck haash. The cooking is vastly superior to that of traditional high street curry houses. Despite having a seating for 100 and an out of the way location, it is essential to book at weekends. Pricing is surprisingly modest given the culinary standards.
