The Ritz London

The Ritz Hotel, 150 Piccadilly, London, W1J 9BR

If you want to experience grand dining in London at its most opulent level, then The Ritz is the only place for you. The ornate dining room overlooking Green Park is quite magnificent, as is the service from the well-trained staff who look after you, from raising the silver cloches from the plates, quite superbly, to flambéing your dessert. The food is less dramatic than the setting but perfectly adequate and sometimes first-rate, whilst it is always spoiling. Choose from Starters like a half lobster en gelée with Russian salad and mayonnaise; salad of seared scallops, aubergine caviar, citrus and saffron dressing; and pan fried goose foie gras with roasted figs and basil oil, to Mains of Dover sole, turbot, sea bass wild Scottish salmon served with Bearnaise, Nantaise or herb butter sauce; Chateaubriand souffle potatoes, gratin of French beans (2 covers) and grilled fillet of Angus beef with sauce Bearnaise.

Leave room for their Desserts though: exotic fruit basket with red berry sorbet and passion sauce; to lemon and basil delice with strawberry coulis; and iced blood orange parfait with citrus sorbet and orange sauce. This is truly sybaritic, comfort food at its best.

You could always take Afternoon Tea (not served in the Dining room), which is generally considered to be the finest on offer in London and is therefore, booked out weeks ahead.

REVIEWS OF The Ritz London

Jason (22 September 2008)

We had an amateur night at The Ritz on Friday, yes, you can't deny it marvellous decor oozing in style and good taste, if only the food and service could attain the same level. The last time we dined at the Ritz was in February this year, since then it appears to have fallen apart at the seams. This time, we had a table for four to celebrate the birthday of one of our guests. I ordered Pouilly-Fuissé and they delivered Pouilly-Fumé. For starters we ordered two scallops, one foie gras and oysters each; they delivered the scallops and the foie gras but they totally forgot about the oysters. We sat and waited while the scallops went cold. It was a further 22 minutes before the oysters appeared, so it was a disastrous start. For mains we ordered two Dover soles, one steak and oyster each. The steak and the plate were cold as were both the Dover soles. As one guest was very hungry the Dover sole was consumed, the oysters being a cold meal were also consumed. Offers were made to re-heat the steak and the fish but the moment had passed, the spell had been broken, reheated food at the Ritz. I don't think so and certainly not at these prices. All we wanted now was a quick dessert, a coffee and away. We ordered vanilla ice cream and got two unadorned scoops in what appeared to be a large soup bowl, no wafers or decoration. The coffee was bitter and tasted burnt, we couldn't drink it. We had arranged for a small cake with a candle for our guest whose birthday it was and the cake was about the size of Mr Kipling’s chocolate cup cake. As the waiter placed the cake in front of our guest he announced, not to the host, but to the guest ‘You won’t be charged for this, it's free’. The steak and the Dover sole were knocked off the bill but this amateur night at the Ritz still cost £475.00.

WOW, absolutely amazing, the ambience was of beauty, the atmosphere stunning, the surrounding regal, can’t wait to be there again, expensive but worth every penny, especially the soufflé.
