REVIEWS OF The Rocks
Andrew Morris (5 October 2008)
We live in Dunbar, and had booked a table for six to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Some of our party had travelled over four hundred miles just to be with us. We were asked to arrive promptly at 7.00 p.m, as they told us they had a party of twelve coming in at 7.30. So we said they could pick us up in their mini bus at 6.45 p.m. At 7.05 there was still no sign of their bus, so I called to find out what had happened. A rather rude man told me that there was a problem, but a taxi would be with us soon. Due to his attitude I told him that unless the taxi reached us in five minutes, I would cancel. At 7.15 pm I rang up, and cancelled. Surprisingly there was no apology, and seemingly no apparent concern. Spend your money where they want to look after you. Not at the Rocks though.
The Viewforth Girls (29 January 2008)
We are a group of women, eight of us, with very different backgrounds, who meet up once a year to catch up and enjoy a meal. This year's venue was the Rocks – we booked in for lunch on a Saturday.
We were given a table in a side room, which we were grateful for, as we can get a bit noisy. We took long choosing our meals as there is a fantastic choice on the menu, and a wonderful list of specials on the chalkboard. Fish was obviously a speciality, but there were plenty of meat and also vegetarian options. We did not get a murmur of complaint from the staff, who were extremely helpful about the time we were taking.
In fact, one of our party arrived very late, having been lost trying to find the place, but our waiter happily took the mobile phone and guided her. The wine flowed, water jugs were kept topped up, and the meal arrived in what seemed to us really good timing. It was neither too slow nor too rushed and gave us time for talking. The food was superb, plenty on the plate and the quality was excellent. We all had different dishes and no one had a problem with their choice. It was turn for the pudding and though we all wanted something, we were fairly full, so the waiter suggested we ask for half-portion sweets, which was perfect. It was an eating experience we all enjoyed, and we can be a fussy bunch! Just to summarize, we had a courtesy bus from Edinburgh - they took us back after the meal. Pre-dinner drinks, lots of wine, three food courses each, and coffee, and our bill was less than £35 per head. I call that value for money, with excellent quality.
