The Royal Well Tavern
5 Royal Well Place, Cheltenham, GL50 3DN
Head Chef Andy Martin's skill of delicious, simple cooking with a commitment to using fresh, seasonal and local produce under the training of previous Head Humphrey Fletcher has become the epitome of a well-balanced, appealing daily changing menu suitable to cater to all appetites. Combined with this, Sam Pearman's domain acumen, which he displayed as part of the team that opened The Kingham Plough, lauded as one of the best restaurant openings of United Kingdom in 2007, have come together to create this classic tavern. They have combined the charm of a classic British pub with the personality of a small French bistro and offer refined, contemporary food, warm hospitality and efficient service in an informal environment.Head Chef Andy Martin's skill of delicious, simple cooking with a commitment to using fresh, seasonal and local produce under the training of previous Head Humphrey Fletcher has become the epitome of a well-balanced, appealing daily changing menu suitable to cater to all appetites. They have combined the charm of a classic British pub with the personality of a small French bistro and offer refined, contemporary food, warm hospitality and efficient service in an informal environment. It is not surprising that they have been mentioned in Good Food Guide 2012 as one of the top two restaurants in Cheltenham in recognition of their high standards of food.
The daily changing menu could feature beetroot soup with horseradish cream, or butternut squash and sage risotto followed by hake fillet with spinach, horseradish potatoes and poached egg. For dessert, cropwell Bishop Stilton with chutney and oatcakes could well be on offer. Well-chosen, good value regional French wines are the focus there.

REVIEWS OF The Royal Well Tavern
True good food lover (29 November 2009)
Outstanding! Cheltenham restaurants can be hit and miss, mostly miss, but The Royal Well Tavern is in a class of its own. There is no pretence of fussy ‘over the top’ table service, just smiles, nice attitude and truly great food. The kitchen is French in origin, but proper French, not the pretend version. Every wine on the wine list is there for a reason, so not massive in quantity but carefully thought out. Please try it, Cheltenham needs quality among all its slap dash eateries and this place deserves to prosper.
Devery (16 February 2009)
My partner and I ate at the Royal Well Tavern on Friday. I couldn’t have a glass of Riesling; it’s sold by the bottle only. I couldn’t have a Gordon’s Gin either, not stocked so I had a Plymouth. My partner had a glass of beer at £2.50. Our meal was a rib eye steak, I am not convinced it was a rib eye; we requested it to be cooked medium-well done but I could see blood on my partner’s plate. The main was £17.00 per head, which came with a bowl of over salted frozen French fries - not a bit of garnish, tomato or mushroom to be seen. When I asked for mushrooms I was told 'we don’t do mushrooms' so had a side of carrots instead for £3.00. The waitress and barman were very pleasant, the chefs were hard working but I’m sorry, I will not be going again. The overall bill was £65.00, which included a 10% optional charge, which sadly I didn’t realize it was on the receipt until the following morning, otherwise I would have asked for it to be taken off. My partner very generously gave a £5.00 tip over and above so the total bill came to £70.00. For an hours dining, one course and four drinks it was a joke - great expectations - poor delivery.
