The Seafood Restaurant
Riverside, Padstow, PL28 8BY
That Padstow is now the culinary mecca of the southwest is very much due to the flair, influence and enthusiasm of the celebrated Rick Stein. The Seafood Restaurant could perhaps be described as the flagship of his operations. The results of what you see on the TV are very much in evidence. The choice of menus is exciting, different methods of cooking are all there and the general ambience is relaxed but well-organised and efficient. The wine list also reflects Rick's travels, currently centred on West Australia. House wines are upwards of £16.50. There are rumblings about the cost of sharing the fruits of Mr Stein's travels, yet I have never heard any complaint from anyone who had actually been there. That Padstow is now the culinary mecca of the southwest is very much due to the flair, influence and enthusiasm of the celebrated Rick Stein. REVIEWS OF The Seafood Restaurant
Alison (22 August 2009)
We were determined to tick off The Seafood Restaurant as a 'been there, done that'. The staff were attentive, knowledgeable and I have to say, we did not experience a rushed lunch but a leisurely preamble through the menu. The hot shellfish starter was delicious, followed by a grilled lobster, a dessert platter for two to share was spot on, the sorbet was excellent and the chocolate fondant was light; the recommended Muscat was reminiscent of toffee apples in oak barrels. The meal was completed with petit four and the coffee was superb.

Oh dear! I've been eating at the Seafood Restaurant once or twice a year for about seven years. It had that winning combination of fresh, smart cooking, a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and great service - a brilliant seaside escape in the bleak mid-winter - and then they went and spoilt it all. The recent refurbishment and change of staff has turned it into a slick city joint that is no doubt ruthlessly efficient, but also absolutely lacking in charm. If I want that sort of thing, there's plenty of the same on offer in London, but it's not what you travel to Cornwall for. The service was no doubt impeccable, but formal and cold, and the only virtue in being rushed through such an expensive meal was that the quality of the food had dipped to such an extent that we were glad to be out of there. We'd actually been booked to eat there on two nights, but cancelled the second booking. If you want to try one of Mr Stein's restaurants, try the Cafe instead. It'll be a happier experience all round. Either that, or one of the many other fine restaurants that have sprung up in the area on the back of Mr Stein's success.
