The Shepherd's Crook
The Green, Crowell, Chinnor, OX39 4RR
Another fine example of the type of pub in Oxfordshire that appears in such profusion with scarcely a bad'un amongst them. Located by the village green the place gets away to a fine start with some of the best kept examples of the best-loved beers in Britain, headed by Timothy Taylor Landlord. The big event of the day is the delivery of fresh fish, giving the menu a distinctly seaborne effect. Much of the produce comes from the locality and Mine Host interests himself mightily in this basic essential. Expect then to see king prawns with garlic and chilli, Cromer crab salad, steak and kidney pie or Oxford sausages with mustard mash and onion gravy, with a touch of game in season. The wine list is well worth a closer study, and contains French wine sourced from a private vineyard.Another fine example of the type of pub in Oxfordshire that appears in such profusion with scarcely a bad'un amongst them. REVIEWS OF The Shepherd's Crook
Mike (22 April 2012)
Fish, Fish, Fish!. I just ate (between two) a dozen Oysters from the East Coast. As local as they can be in Oxfordshire! Stunning, just a squeeze of lemon. Rock pools on a plate! (with Chablis!) And a crab salad to finish. Go there. Eat fish. 7 varieties for "fish 'n' chips".
John Stockwell (11 April 2011)
When dining in France or Belgium recently, the locals tend to recommend small sized restaurants where a couple 'split' front of house and cooking, and when the cooking is of a very high standard and the front of house take an extreme interest in what goes on your plate - even travelling to Boulogne fish market 'because Billingsgate isn't as fresh as it used to be!' Then you have The Shepherd's Crook in Crowell. Well worth a visit if you enjoy good food and a traditional pub setting. Good value wines as well as very interesting beers.
