REVIEWS OF The Tavern at Tansley
Frances (6 December 2010)
New much improved management this year, well worth a visit and food, ignore the reviews from 2008.
Pub Reviews (28 December 2008)
If you find yourself between Christmas and New Year, travelling along the picturesque villages on the edge of the peak district at lunch time, and stumble upon The Tavern at Tansley, off Matlock, with its ample parking and traditional stone building, and peek into its atmospheric country pub bar, don’t be tempted to stay for lunch. We should have spotted the early signs of a stressed staff as we arrived, with a rather impersonal/impatient greeting to inform us that they would prepare a table in the back room. Our guess was that they had a skeleton staff over the holiday period, particularly in the kitchen, as we waited over an hour for our food. With a hungry child in tow, this was not a comfortable wait, and we had no apologies or indication from the staff as to how the food was doing, or bread or the like, although we were asked if we would like to order more drinks. On arrival, it was nice enough pub food - smoked haddock on mustard mash, roast beef, sausages and mash. Two dishes had to go back, one twice, as ‘no gravy’ and ‘gravy on the side, please’ was forgotten in the mists of time. First time back the already drowned mashed potatoes had been simply lifted onto another plate, second time, new mash. If the food itself was okay, our major complaint is about the poor service. Next time we’ll keep driving, and we suggest you do the same.
