The Tickell Arms, for many years home to the eccentric, unpredictable and late Kim Tickell, is a much-loved landmark within the Cambridge scene. Chef Spencer Patrick has taken over with the result that the food in particular is more reliable and arguably much improved, though the medley of flamboyant decor, part of the Tickell legacy, lingers on. A set lunch and dinner is offered, of two or three courses, with lunch offering the traditional good value that is so often the case. A well-remarked starter could be a terrine of smoked guinea fowl, sweetbreads and foie gras, with pistachios and truffle, served with glazed figs, and in the evenings a panache of sea scallops, cauliflower puree and sauce Perigord helps to underline chef's regard for the conventional alongside the modern touches.

It was an amazing restaurant with local ingredients all the way, and free champers put in your hand when you walk through the door. The person who owns the place knows the meaning of hospitality. I would rate it as a ten out of ten.

I heard that a new chef has taken on the Tickell with 3 michelin experience, so my husband and I decided to pop over for dinner last saturday night - it was an amazing menu, all East Anglian produce with a French twist, amuse bouche of trompette de mort veloute was beautiful, delicate and finished with a Norfolk truffle starters executed with passion. The main course was excellent - bourne woods venison with lavender and juniper from their garden. A truly great night and the owner also did his rounds in the restaurant after telling our fellow diners about the food and the history. This is now a great place in the area, also the prices and information on them needs updating.
