The Verandah
17 Dalry Road, Edinburgh, EH11 2BQ
What have Sir Cliff Richard, Clint Eastwood and Imran Khan got in common? The answer is that they all eat at The Verandah when they visit Edinburgh. Right from the start, by rejecting red flock wallpaper and hot curries for a popular blend of tropical timber blinds and fine delicate dishes The Verandah broke with the conventional view of what made an Indian restaurant. This cool attractive atmosphere is personified in its proprietor, Dr. Wali Tasar Uddin, MBE, JP. After coming to this country from Bangladesh, Wali has not been long in fully integrating himself in the life of his newly adopted home. The Verandah has been awarded every major honour that a restaurant can receive, such as "Best Indian Restaurant" by Scottish Good Food Guide, "Restaurant of The Year" by M8, "Best In Britain" by National Restaurant Directory, "Best In Scotland" by Good Curry Guide, Les Routiers "Casserole Award" twelve years in a row, Listed in Britain's Top Indian Restaurants By The Good Curry Guide and has continually received accolades from restaurant critics and other guide books. What have Sir Cliff Richard, Clint Eastwood and Imran Khan got in common? However, The Verandah remains reassuringly low key. The intimacy of the service is never lost neither is the attention to detail, be it the fresh flowers on the table or the final hint of seasoning for a specially cooked dish. "We always remember that our customers are our most valued asset" says Wali "And no amount of awards can shift our attention from providing the best Bangladeshi experience that we can".

REVIEWS OF The Verandah
Liz Fuller (5 September 2010)
Verandah is a small Indian restaurant on Dalry Road. It was recently redecorated, and features pink walls, wooden tables and chairs. The meals begin with a plate of papadam served with chutney and two other sauces, one brown and the other green. We started with the Verandah mixed of appetizers, which included chicken kebab, lamb kebab, tandoori king prawn, vegetable pakora, chicken pakora, and sheek kebab. We liked the chicken kebab the best, as well as the other. I had a glass of white wine which was very good. For the entrees we shared two dishes. The chicken joypuri was cooked in a blend of mushroom sauce and spices and sag panir dupiaza was cubes of fresh homemade cheese cooked with spinach, chunks of onions, tomato, green peppers and spices. Both were good, but we enjoyed the chicken joypuri most. We had an order of puri which was two large pieces of the puffy bread. Service was prompt and attentive throughout the meal. The prices at The Verandah have increased slightly from what they were, but the restaurant still features quality food at a reasonable rate.

I visited Verandah with my family last weekend. It was our first visit and I was impressed with the food, service and ambiance. For the quality of the dishes and the location it is very reasonably priced. The staff were accommodating but at the same time not overbearing. A great discovery – we will be back!
