The Vineyard at Stockcross
Stockcross, Newbury, RG20 8JU
Privately owned by Sir Peter Michael. Many have fallen in love with The Vineyard's mix of luxurious accommodation, gourmet food, its vast array of fine wines and the collection of original art that adorn the walls. In October 2009, Daniel Galmiche joined them as Executive Chef and his passion for food certainly shows on the menu. Daniel, a Frenchman, has lived and worked for most of his career in England and held a Michelin star for 20 years. By those in the know, he is described as the 'King of contemporary French cooking'. Given the owner Sir Peter Michael has a vineyard in California, it is not surprising that there are good American influences at work in matters such as wine. The highly prized list of Californian wines are the speciality of the house, but it does not eclipse the vast number of offerings from around the world.Privately owned by Sir Peter Michael. REVIEWS OF The Vineyard at Stockcross
Geoff and Val Beckett (15 January 2010)
We celebrated our Pearl wedding anniversary on a Tuesday in December. Our suite was exceptional and dinner that evening was faultless; beautifully presented and tasted delicious. Our dessert was extra special as the word 'Anniversary' was written on our plates. I can only apologise for taking so long in writing this review. I was unaware of this facility on your website. Thank you so much for such a memorable time.
Mark Barefoot (6 December 2008)
We went to this restaurant for the first time today. As soon as we got to the entrance we immediately felt welcomed by the staff. The overall ambience is relaxing, and not stuffy in any way. No ‘showy’ waiters or Maître’d flapping about. The dining area is on different levels and it is nice and open, with plenty of space between the tables. The food was splendid. We chose the a la carte and each dish was yummy.
The starters were organic salmon, ‘mi-cuit’, spiced lentils, and foie gras. The salmon just melts in your mouth. For the mains I had the turbot with pork belly, langoustines, lemongrass foam, mash and spinach/lentil. The turbot was cooked to perfection and the mash was so smooth. My partner had venison, celeriac, bacon choucroute, and sloe gin jelly, and this again was cooked to perfection. We ended up with Hazelnut sponge, muscovado and caramel, which was so light and tasty, and cucumber sorbet, lime and mango yogurt, which sounds odd, but was so refreshing. It came with a shot of cucumber juice, which again sounds odd, but was incredibly moreish. If you want an enjoyable evening out that is pretty reasonable, £170 for two for three courses, four glasses of wine and one round of drinks, then definitely take a look.
