The White Horse - Redbourn Lane
Redbourn Lane, Hatching Green, Harpenden, AL5 2JP
The White Horse joins the group of popular pubs known as Peach co-founded by Lee Cash. Opening his first pub, The Rose and Crown in Warwick, ten years ago, Lee is passionate about good, honest food along with efficient and friendly service. This pub in Harpenden, about a hundred miles from Brocket Hall has regained its original charm and includes a superbly designed interior. The private dining room, with a seating of 12, is designed with a diversity that offers the right environment for a cheerful party, or those with more romantic activity in mind. From a menu large enough to excite interest rather than suspicion look for starters of free-range chicken and summer vegetable terrine with apricot chutney, or Cornish crab cocktail with guacamole and taco. The White Horse joins the group of popular pubs known as Peach co-founded by Lee Cash. From a menu large enough to excite interest rather than suspicion look for starters of free-range chicken and summer vegetable terrine with apricot chutney, or Cornish crab cocktail with guacamole and taco. Amongst the main courses the Casterbridge rack of lamb with creamy mash and minted peas, roast Romano pepper and tomato quiche with garden salad rouses interest, alongside with pan-fried Welsh sea bass, fennel, apple and potato coleslaw with summer leaf salad.
Desserts are a must and you could choose from warm treacle tart with mascarpone; chocolate brownie and Vanilla ice-cream, or lemon posset, lime syrup with ginger biscuits.
It is to be hoped that the worthy folk of Harpenden and district recognise genius when they see it. My guess is not only that they will but that they will be joined from a far wider spread.

REVIEWS OF The White Horse - Redbourn Lane
Gooman (17 October 2008)
I first ate at the White Horse shortly after it opened, and it was probably the best meal I had ever tasted, but now it has gone downhill. First, we tried eating in the bar, as I'd been unsuccessful in getting a restaurant reservation even a week in advance. The bar area is little more than a waiting area for the restaurant. There was no pub atmosphere, just a simple bar. The table was rickety, and the bar menu extremely short, nothing really took our fancy. On the off-chance I asked the barman if there had been any cancellations in the restaurant, and we seemed to be in luck. The restaurant area was a little overcrowded, and the floor felt a little unsteady. My partner and I had to swap places as; she could clearly feel the floor move as the waiters went past. When our starters arrived, the first problem was that the oversized plates were way too large for the table; we barely had room on it for our drinks and the bread. The bread came baked in a small terracotta flower pot, it was very cute, but unfortunately it wasn't cooked properly and was very doughy in the middle. We had both ordered the same main course - rib-eye steak. Mindful that rib-eye can be fatty, I asked the waitress if it was fatty, and she said that it wasn't. Unfortunately when it arrived it was extremely fatty, gristly and with a spongy texture. I've eaten rib-eye enough times to know that this was seriously sub-standard. When the maitre’d came by to ask us how our food was, I told her. She said the waitress must have meant that it wasn't a particularly fatty rib-eye, but that rib-eye is a fatty cut. I didn't think it worth arguing the point. She took the bread and steaks off the bill, we paid for the starters and wine and left. The members of staff at the White Horse were all extremely young, and severely lacking in warmth and confidence. I will not be going there again.

The food here was actually quite good, but the place is a shambles. I had butter sauce from my steak poured down my back, and it was the wrong steak! We also got another tables’ bar bill and had to wait for our table at the bar even though other groups were taken through. Also, they had used every spare slot of space to put a table in. The food seemed pretty decent though there was not much of it. It was expensive compared to what you got, but the rest of the guests seemed pretty happy.
