Theobalds Restaurant Description
Located in a gorgeously romantic half-timbered building of 1650, Theobalds' long-established appointment to the culinary requirements of discerning people in Suffolk comes as no surprise. It says much for the delivery of a consistently high standard of excellent fare (to use that much-debased word in its proper context). Start with the grilled scallops on a bed of saffron and roast pepper risotto. If the time is right, stray to the hare wrapped in bacon with a mushroom and Madeira sauce, bowing out with a chocolate and walnut mousse with orange crème anglaise. Of such is the kingdom . . .
Good robust wine list with five house wines starting at £11.25 for the bottle, or £2.95 a glass.
No children under 8 years at dinner.

We've been to Theobalds several times and always had an excellent meal. It's very homely, yet formal. Typically one will have a pre-dinner drink at the fireside and choose from the menu before being shown to your table. Service has a family feel with young ladies from the village as waitresses. It's the food that's the main event though. Simon is a brilliant chef. The food is fresh and all homemade including the bread rolls and the ice cream. The menus are tasty and imaginative. My only problem is that we moved further away, to Ipswich, so can't get back there so often. It’s always in our minds for a special occasion though.

I went as a surprise birthday treat last year and had some of the best food I have ever tasted, looking to go for a Christmas treat this year.
