Tilleys Bistro

Tucked away in a narrow, picturesque passage Tilleys Bistro is a source of delight to a regular and discerning clientele who enjoy its ambiance and air of quiet confidence. At lunch time a set menu operates, in the evening there are two a la carte menus, meat or fish and vegetarian/vegan.

Parking is good, as a result of which many use Tilley's for pre-theatre suppers or drinks, since they open at 6.30pm. Many will find that two courses suffice; helpings are generous, prices likewise, in favour of the customer.

The antipasto is a meal in itself, though you m ay be tempted by the escargots a la bourguignonne, one dozen for £8.50. The lamb's kidneys in a port and cream sauce are beautifully prepared with just the right degree of resistance, and the four fish brochette features salmon, monkfish, tiger prawn and sardine on a skewer with a wild mushroom risotto.

The fresh strawberry pancakes served warm with clotted cream make a refreshing conclusion to the meal but don't ignore the possibility of a selection from the Salcombe dairy sorbets.

A well annotated wine list completes the happiness with house wine at £11, or £2.30 per glass.
