Tollgate Inn, The

I visited The Tollgate Inn with a group of seven friends last weekend for Sunday lunch, we were staying nearby for a weekend break and had left it quite late in the day to book. When we arrived the bar was very busy and we chose to be seated at our table, we ordered some drinks and the waitress brought us some bread and olives to nibble on whilst we had a good read at the menus on offer. A great value Sunday lunch, we all decided to go for the Sunday roast, plenty of choice there with three roasts, I had the roast rib of beef, and very tasty totally sublime, other guests reported scrumptious food. What really impressed me was the waiting staff, all girls, all very busy but very attentive, nothing was too much trouble and very obviously a very busy restaurant. We had a fabulous lunch, the food was better than I had hope for, the best beef I have tasted in years and puddings to swell your waistline. We can't wait to plan our next trip to Bradford on Avon; we had a lovely weekend away and great service.

We had an evening meal at the Tollgate on Saturday, 1st March. Our meal started well, but we had cause to complain about our main courses - everyone's food was tepid as the plates were cold, a steak that was ordered medium rare, was under-cooked, and my plaice was served with butter that was far from fresh. We brought these complaints to the maitre d's attention only to be challenged and, in some cases, told that we were wrong. There was no apology, and the chef refused to speak to us, despite the restaurant being quite quiet. These complaints were minor but the fact that they were dealt with so badly meant that our meal was totally ruined. Whilst this may be a glitch, I felt I had to write a review to warn others as it is hailed as a magnificent restaurant.
