Tonic Description

tonic nottingham restaurant barChapel Quarter has swiftly emerged as one of Nottingham's premier destinations very much thanks to places like Tonic, which can be aptly described as a welcome addition to this culinary oasis. There's plenty to explore once you're inside; the first floor restaurant is a striking combination of comfort and style with smart furnishings and atmospheric lighting. The impressive cinematic art installation grips your attention instantly and the open kitchen exemplifies the theatrical experience.

Tonic is certainly causing a stir on the Nottingham eating out scene, winning Best Newcomer and Runner Up in the Best Design and Best Use of Local Produce categories of The Nottingham Restaurant Awards 2007, and following this up with runner up in the overall category of Nottingham Restaurant of the Year in the 2008 awards.

If a steaming hot cup of Fair Trade coffee with some pastries helps you kick start the day, then just head to Tonic. What's more? Well, you could even pack a gourmet sandwich or salad for lunch. The main bar with its timber ceilings is the perfect place for an after-work drink and at weekends DJs tactfully pump up the decibels by playing an eclectic mix of funky, vocal house while ensuring that the sound levels do not disrupt conversation.

The regularly changing menu is in tune with the seasons and brings in a modern twist to formula British cooking. So there's pea soup and smoked bacon scone; millefeuille of woodpigeon, celeriac and cep mushrooms, and crab and spring onion linguini to be enjoyed as starters. This could be followed by herb crusted Derbyshire lamb rump alongside gratin potato and minted green beans, or organic salmon accompanied by saffron fondant potato, spinach and lemon butter sauce. A gloriously decadent chocolate fudge with nut brownie and butterscotch bananas or glazed vanilla brûlée with red berry compote will delight those with a sweet tooth.

If you fancy a nibble at the bar, classics of beer battered fish and chips, wild mushrooms on toast, Mr. Dooley's Lincolnshire sausages and char-grilled chicken and bacon burger are there aplenty, and the opportunity to indulge in one of their extensive cocktail selections should not be missed. Never mind if you decide to have a burst of originality and try something different, the bartender enjoys a challenge.

The deli menu will delight health advocates with carrot, honey and ginger smoothie, peppered chicken Caesar salad and Manor Farm yogurt with berries and hazelnuts and if you've lost the plot on counting calories go for the freshly baked pain au chocolate, all butter croissant or oatmeal and golden syrup flapjack. With several entertainment venues nearby, Tonic's pre-theatre deals are designed to work in tandem with a diner's theatre plans and who'd not love a chicken liver parfait or a char-grilled rib eye steak before hitting the shows?

Whether it's soulful live music to ignite the spirit or nail-biting sporting events, it's all happening here at Tonic. For those who want to be a part of this fun-filled night out experience or are just looking to explore what this wonderful place has to offer, delving through their Website should do the trick.

Your Reviews of Tonic

Ian (28 March 2009)

With the apparent demise of "The Almond" the search was on again for a top Nottingham restaurant. I am delighted to say that, with Tonic, a strong contender has been found.

The quality of the food and service was faultless. Never has cheese and potato pie been so upmarket!

The only note of caution is that the restaurant is not the place for quiet meals. Although not full, the combined noise from occupied tables bounced around and made normal conversation difficult.

Having said that, go there and treat yourself. I will be again very soon.

Rebecca (13 November 2008)

I recently dined at Tonic and was impressed. I ate off the very reasonably priced pre-theatre menu, and had a superb meal in a beautiful setting. The meal was really great, the portion sizes just right and the staff very friendly; not in your face, but on hand at the right times to make our party feel very welcome and looked after. Would highly recommend this restaurant, and am returning again soon to try the a la carte menu; this looked delicious, and I need to try the desserts in miniature.
