Trouble House, The Description
Gloucestershire Newcomer of the Year in 2003, Michael and Sarah Bedford took over this Wadworth's pub by the lower band and gave it a jolly good makeover. Whilst it is true that the basic material was there the change is profound and as with so many things the fact that it has been done simply is the main ingredient of its success. The same strictures apply to the production of the food, which is uncomplicated - and good.
A typical menu might offer moules marinieres, smoked haddock and whisky soup, tomato and goat's cheese tart with mixed leaves or cured salmon with celeriac puree and lemon and caper dressing.
For mains the Gloucester Old Spot sausage and mash with onion gravy draws well on local ingredients; roasted cod with haricot beans, lentils and bacon, or braised shank of lamb with swede mash make sound alternatives.
The puddings menu produces some old favourites such as glazed Basque tart, orange and rosemary syrup cake, or passion fruit and pineapple marinated in Chardonnay with grapefruit sorbet.
Prices are most reasonable, supported by a brief wine list, starting with six house wines from £12.50. One suspects that the Bedfords may be really enjoying life and their customers certainly are.
Your Reviews of Trouble House, The
Ian Meyrick (30 November 2005)
Having booked a table for 2 for my 53rd birthday everything went wrong, the barman was far too busy to cope with customers. Hot water tap in gents broken. Ordered steak and chips medium well, when it came the chips were the thin oven chips type similar to McDonalds, the steak was not even a medium and all was COLD. Sent it back, it came back 2 minutes later having obviously been stuck under a microwave for a minute. No knife and fork, eventually got a knife and fork, knife blunt, steak tough and still COLD. Paid and walked out, never again.

I've been here a couple of times, and will be going back this week. The place has a friendly relaxed atmosphere; the wine list is good and varied; the menus are interesting and well put together with some strong flavours. I've eaten pig's cheek here, and oxtail, neither of which are seen very often elsewhere. Recommended for a good meal in unpretentious surroundings.
