Truffles Restaurant

I visited Truffles Restaurant on 25th March with family, who had come from Cambridge to visit me in Leeds, stuck for a nice place to go, I googled the area and picked Truffles in Otley. Having never been to Otley before, the four of us were pleasantly surprised.

The restaurant was quaint in a lovely building, I'm a professional chef by trade, having worked for TV chefs, and a corporate hospitality manager too, I had liver pate for my starter, which was very tasty, laced with brandy but not to overpowering and served with toast fingers, main course I had the Sunday roast which was also very nice with large amounts of fresh vegetables. A nice healthy wine list with bottles displayed around the dining area and pleasant decor throughout.

The salmon dish didn’t sound very appealing on the Sunday lunch menu, salmon with an orange and herb crust with gooseberry sauce, so we all gave that one a miss! The owners seemed very friendly, though the foreign waiter could do with more training and enthusiasm about his job, but overall 8/10.

I visited a friend who lives in Otley recently, and invited her out to dinner. As I didn't know the area well, I walked around the town looking for somewhere suitable beforehand. From the exterior, Truffles looked to be a sound choice, established, if rather traditional menu, and reasonably priced.

Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The food was edible, but dull - and very old-fashioned e.g. the vegetables were boiled to death. I found the atmosphere stuffy and old-fashioned, and the poor waitress had to keep running up and down stairs to our attic table. I got the impression from the proprietor (I assume it was he) that we were bundled away as we weren't locals. I ended up paying over £80 for a very disappointing meal in a stuffy environment. Sorry, but I wouldn't go there again.
