Ubiquitous Chip Description
UC has been around so long that it seems to be part of the foundations of Glasgow. It has made Ashton Lane fashionable in gastronomic terms. Essentially the cuisine is Scottish with more than a modern touch. There is a menu for every occasion and a good rotation of regular items. The a la carte carries a soup pf the day, a filo tart of Buckie crab with Hollandaise, red pepper and chambery sauce and horseradish cream, or maybe some Dumfriesshire rabbit, a pear and pistachio nut sausage with basil cabbage.
Main courses pursue the same route with ling landed at Scrabster on clapshot with chilli roasted red pepper and crispy seaweed, or blackface lam, fed on heather at Smeaton Farm, lamb and apricot stovies with peas and shallots in mint. For those with a penchant for cheese, and there seem to be a lot of them at UC, the cheeseboard is one of the best, well-kept and never slow to pick up on new cheeses as they emerge. However for those with a nagging sweet tooth don't miss the UC's Caledonian oatmeal ice-cream with fruit compote - seriously compelling. Successive wine merchants have seen to it that UC carries a cellar to compliment well its fine food. A three course dinner costs £37.50. House wine comes in at £13.95 and there are plenty of wines by the glass.

I was recommended by a Glaswegian to go visit this institution, a good sign. I heartily recommend others to do the same as the food served here is impeccable. Really fine - just beautifully executed, seasonal, Scottish. I went alone and the staff were considerate, attentive and courteous - almost more than necessary. But I appreciated it anyway. It's a slightly odd place - you can sit upstairs or down - and it's slightly disorientating upon arrival - it took me a few minutes and asking bar staff to figure out where to announce myself. But it is a very pleasant environment once you are seated. My only criticism is price. I think it could be priced a little bit more keenly - with a single glass of wine and no dessert I ended up with a £40 bill and I thought that slightly steep, though others may not. I'm sure the Brasserie is better value. Next time I would definitely try that first. I also think that with the Gourmet Glasgow event on staff might have volunteered the £15 for two courses offer which would have made the visit even more of a joy. However, when I'm in this great city next I shall look them up again.

Ten of us went to this restaurant for a celebration dinner last week and had a wonderful time. The service was excellent and we all enjoyed the food. Great atmosphere - would certainly go back/recommend it.
