Byron Restaurant
Swynford Paddocks Hotel, nr Cambridge, Six Mile Bottom, CB8 0UE [Map]
As befits an elegant country house in the vicinity of Newmarket there are strong horseracing associations and that champion of the turf, Lord Halifax, owned the house until 1976. Byron, whose half-sister lived here, is said to have written some of the finest of his verses beneath the cooling shade of a large (but now felled) beech tree in the garden. The restaurant has a good record of awards for what should be described as quality traditional country house food served well amidst comfortable surroundings. House wines start at £14.50 and are supported by a list which matches the restaurant style.
