Restaurant at The Crown Lodge Hotel
Downham Road, Outwell, Wisbech, PE14 8SE [Map]
Misguided and unfriendly folk tend to be scathing about the Fens. At first hearing an invitation to Welle Creek sounds rather like the location for a re-make of The Blair Project. Not a bit of it. Here is a small, well-run family-run hotel with good local backing and a restaurant at the forefront of the operation. The menu is traditional and unfussed, in keeping with the well-managed informality of the entire establishment.
Adequate wine list with well-priced house wines.

The Three Horseshoes
High Street, Madingley, CB23 8AB [Map]
Another member of the Huntsbridge Group, with the same open approach to the business, which describes its culinary policy as Mediterranean/Global, a very apt summary. Whilst you nibble on a bowl of warm olives or pork scratchings even, you may contemplate rare tuna nori rolls with nuoc cham and green mango salad. Salads can be particularly memorable; leek, potato, rocket, and chorizo with soft-boiled egg and bottarga for instance.
Try the pan-fried halibut with mashed peas, broad beans and a sprinkling of black olives, served on a plate slicked with mint oil and tapenade. Follow with pannacotta served with dark cherries and you will see that you are in the hands of experts. As with others in the Group the drinking of wine is intelligently tackled. There are over 30 bottles at £20 or under, with 16 house wines starting at around £12 a bottle. Pay special attention to the dessert wines.

The Huntly Restaurant
Best Western Orton Hall Hotel, The Village, Orton Longueville, Peterborough, PE2 7DN [Map]
Orton Hall is an attractive and quite unusual country house on the outskirts of Peterborough. There is original panelling about and the skyline has some affinity with the Victorian architects, Page and Garling, who remodelled Grimsthorpe Castle, not far away.
Chef Kevin Wood presides over a kitchen which produces good food from the last decades of the 20th century, so nothing too adventurous but all of it sound. Braised lamb shank, pasta with roast garlic and coriander sauce, all well-served by attentive and friendly staff.
A la Carte dinner costs about £28.00, lunch around £17.00 with house wine coming in at £11.50.
A good place to take Granny or Ma-in-law, both of whom will feel completely at home and have a jolly happy time. Oh, and by the way you can get married there too.
