Byron Restaurant

As befits an elegant country house in the vicinity of Newmarket there are strong horseracing associations and that champion of the turf, Lord Halifax, owned the house until 1976. Byron, whose half-sister lived here, is said to have written some of the finest of his verses beneath the cooling shade of a large (but now felled) beech tree in the garden.

For those who associate matters Polish with gloomy dockyards and turbulent politics, just clear your mind of prejudice and hurry along down to Cazimir where Ania Piotrowska holds sway. First the decor, a riot of bright cheerful colours that runs through the entire range of fittings in the restaurant, but done in such a way that it doesn't jar.

What a fun night we had at Charlie Chan's on Regent Street! Our daughter with husband and their two boys descended on the place early out of deference to the boys - so early we had to break out of Evensong at King's College (try doing it some time).
